As part of our language learning, Grade 1/2 students use the Daily 5 program each day in centres. Every day, we focus on a different language skill, such as: listening to reading, reading to self or with a friend, working on writing, fine motor skills, and playing with words. Students play a variety of words games to learn their meaning, how to read and spell them. Below are examples of different activities while students develop vocabulary related to our unit of inquiry.

This week in iSTEAM, Grade 1/2 students learned about Tony Sarg, an incredible puppeteer. While listening to the story Balloons over Broadway, students learned about the origins of the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade in the United States and the life of Tony Sarg. Tony Sarg was the mastermind behind the amazing helium balloons that are seen in the annual parade. Once finished, the students were tasked with creating their own balloons for our Thanksgiving Parade. Take a look below at their creations! Here is the link to a read aloud of the book on YouTube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMFNdhvb2a0 This year, the Grade 1/2 students have a year-long unit that focuses on "Societies celebrate significant events." Each season, students will explore what celebrations and significant events their families, and our school community celebrate. To start off this unit of inquiry, students explored a sensory bin filled with a variety of books about Fall, Thanksgiving, Diwali and Remembrance Day.
Welcome back to Grade 1/2! During our first week of school, Grade 1/2 got to know each other and work together to complete some iSTEAM challenges. First, we had to build a structure using q-tips and clay. We had to figure out how to work with our partners to successfully build a tower. Then, working with a different partner, we had to build the longest paper chain possible with only 1 sheet of paper! Take a look at the photos below. This unit, Grade 2/3 is exploring the use of language to express themselves. Students explored Haiku, Acrostic poems, Diamond poems, and Shape poems. They also learned about rhyming, hyperboles, similes, personnification, and metaphors. As they explore the new poems, they practiced writing with each style. As a task, students were challenged to pick a type of poem, and to incorporate poetic devices while each choosing their own subject. Take a look below at our creations! This week, Grade 2/3 took a short field trip to the park down the road to spend the afternoon skating in the fresh air. We were so lucky to have the whole rink to ourselves. As the Grade 2/3 continue to work on their unit about structures and forces, we started to think about structures that are not man-made. We thought about what structures we could find in nature, that either occur naturally, or are made by animals. We also thought about the form and function of the different natural structures. Here are some examples of natural structures that we thought of! As students in Grade 2/3 settle into tele-learning in the new year, they began learning about their new unit which focuses on forces and structures. At home, students were challenged to create a toy that moves using a force. Students had to create a plan for their toy, identify materials needed, and spent a few days building and adjusting their toy. Then, they shared their creations and demonstrated their toys for the other students. During our unit on the workplace, students in Grade 2/3 spent time researching their future career of interest. After researching, writing a rough draft, typing their good copy in Google Docs, and practicing presenting, students were prepared to present their projects. On Career Day, students came to school dressed for success in their future careers. Take a look below at some photos.
Grade 2/3 has started working on their new unit focusing on the Workplace. We've been focusing on the idea of having a common goal within a team. To work on collaboration, students have been playing different cooperative games. We've been practicing our listening skills, compromising, and working together to accomplish a task. Some activities included: Sneak-a-peek, where students had one person that had to give directions to build a shape with blocks; Cup stacking without touching the cups; and designing a Dream Car. Take a look at the photos below to see us in action!
