This week, students chose a simple machine found in their house and wrote 5 clues to describe it. These clues were shared with the class and they had to guess which object they brought from their house. Students then identified what simple machines were part of the object.

On November 20th, we got to visit the museum of Science and Technology. We participated in a workshop about simple machines, and spent the afternoon exploring the different exhibits with many hands on learning opportunities! To launch our new unit of inquiry, we started this gloomy Monday morning off with an exciting building activity! The students were challenged with a task to build a pyramid out of sugar cubes, but the trick was they couldn't use their hands! Students were encouraged to use simple machines that they learned about in STEM, along with some guidance from Madame Shannon to complete the task and build the Great Pyramids of Egypt. Our inquiry into culture has brought us towards Native American culture, and its impact that it has on current day society. We listened to Native American music, watched videos about Pow Wows, and looked at types of clothing. We were especially intrigued about their dot art work, so we created our very own dot art inspired by nature. The month of October brought us on our first field trip of the year to Parliament Hill. During our tour, we looked for symbols around Parliament and learned about their significance. We enjoyed visiting the library, the Senate, the hall of Honour, and seeing the giant portraits. During our first unit, we had the opportunity to share our family traditions. We learned a lot about how some of our families do things in common, and how we also celebrate different traditions. |
