This year was a year unlike any other. Starting the school year in September at school, and finishing online proved to be challenging, yet rewarding. Students in Grade 1/2 participated in a modified tele-learning program put together by teachers at our school. For our class, each week students received a Choice Board which included activities that related to our unit of inquiry. They could complete the activities in any order they pleased, independently or with guidance from parents or their homeroom teacher. They also participated in Google Meet instructional periods for Math every other day, and twice a week they had live classes with their homeroom teacher. They also participated in Google Meet instructional classes for Physical Education, English and Music. For other specialists such as language, and arts, students received learning activities to complete throughout the week.
At the end of the week, students submitted evidence of their learning. This step played an important role for teachers to reassess the learning progress of students, and guided where the following week would take their learning experiences. In all, I think the students continued learning - and learned a lot! As a teacher, I also learned a lot about technology, and best practices to deliver curriculum virtually. Most importantly, I think students learned a lot about themselves, and started to view themselves as independent learners in control of their learning journey. Students were able to manage their time to explore their interests, such as coding or art, and then shared their learning with their peers. I saw great progress in self-management skills as students became responsible for tracking their learning, completing tasks, and sharing their experiences with their teachers and parents. Have a wonderful summer, and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone in the Fall!

Currently, the Grade 1/2 students are learning about water and how it is essential for all living things. Students learned about polluted water, and thought about ways to help keep water clean. Then, they were tasked with creating a water filter with materials found at home. Students used things such as coffee filters, pebbles and sand to create their filters. See some results below!
When the snow finally melted, the sun started to shine, and the trees began to bud, the Grade 1/2 students were so excited for Spring! To celebrate the arrival of Spring during our Home Learning sessions, students created visual poetry. First, we started by brainstorming a list of things that make us think of Spring. Next, we came up with a list of describing words. Then, students sketched a picture that represented Spring, and along the lines used the lists of words to create their image. Here are some of the completed visual poems.
