Learning math at AcadeCap is hands on. It's messy, and it's fun. We use a program called Défi-Mathématiques. This program is concept based, and encourages the use of a variety of manipulatives from Grade 1 through to Grade 6. Défi-Mathématiques focuses on problem solving in context, so children know how the skills are applicable to real-life situations. Students use tools such as base-10 blocks, centicubes, unifix cubes, building blogs, geoboards, bingo counters, Cuisinaire rods, and more. Using manipulatives encourages students to develop a concrete image of how the math "works" and helps students visually solve problems. In our class, we aren't afraid to get messy when trying to solve a problem! We work on the floor, on tables, wherever we need to.

Learning at home during the current health crisis can be difficult for students of all ages. Students in Grade 1/2 spent time talking about big emotions - we call those The Beast. We watched a video by Class Dojo, and then talked about how sometimes we feel some pretty big feelings like anxiety, stress, anger and fear. Then, we drew pictures of what we thought our Beast might look like. Finally, we brainstormed some ideas of how to tame The Beast. Here are some of our suggestions: giving the beast a treat, getting fresh air, taking deep breaths, walking away from a situation, and telling the beast that they won’t let their emotions get the best of them! Here's the video if you'd like to take a look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6CPzyqCff0
During our "How the World Works" unit, students investigated the central idea "Multiple systems interact to keep the human body functioning properly." To have a hands-on experience, students built models of different body systems, and used their hands to learn and explore.
During our unit on National Identity in January/February, students learned about symbols representing Canada. One symbol we learned about was art created by famous Canadians, and how they represent Canada around the world. We learned about Canadian artist, Ted Harrison. Ted Harrison is one of Canada's most known artists. His paintings of nature in the Yukon are recognized around the world. After studying his artwork, learning about warm and cool colours, and nature in the Yukon, we set out to create our own Ted Harrison inspired art. Here are some of the results! |
